WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1998

 

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:39 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 269, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Gar Knutson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Rick Casson, John Herron, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté.

 

Acting Members present: Clifford Lincoln for Roger Gallaway; Gurbax Malhi for David Pratt.

 

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sonya Dakers, Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

 

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Brian Emmett, Commissioner, Environment and Sustainable Development; John Reed, Director, Audit Operations. From Environment Canada: François Guimont, Assistant Deputy Minister, Environmental Protection Service; Bernard Madé, Head, Ozone Protection Programs Section, Commercial Chemicals Evaluation Branch. From Health Canada: Rod Raphael, Acting Director General, Environmental Health Directorate, Health Protection Branch; Yvon Deslauriers, Biophysicist, Head, Lasers and Electro-Optics Unit, Non-Ionizing Radiation Section, Radiation Protection Bureau, Health Protection Branch. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee considered Chapter 27 of the December 1997 Report of the Auditor General of Canada (Ozone Layer Protection: The Unfinished Journey) (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Wednesday, October 29, 1997, Meeting no 8).

 

Brian Emmett, François Guimont, Rod Raphael, Robin Round and Beatrice Olivastri made opening statements and, with Bernard Madé and John Reed, answered questions.

 

At 5:48 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
