MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 60)

MONDAY, JUNE 8, 1998

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:38 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Bernard Bigras, Charles Caccia, Rick Casson, Bill Gilmour, Joe Jordan, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, David Pratt.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert, Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Resource Futures International: John Moffett.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-32, An Act respecting pollution prevention and the protection of the environment and human health in order to contribute to sustainable development. (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Wednesday, May 14, 1998, Meeting No. 53)

The Chair called Clause 1.

John Moffett made an opening statement and answered questions.

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, -- That, on Thursday, June 11, the Committee hold a hearing, to which Members of the Standing Committees on Health and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development be invited to participate, on uranium contamination in the Great Bear Lake region of the Northwest Territories and its effects on the health of local residents, in particular members of the Dene community of Deline, and that representatives of the community be invited to testify.

It was agreed, -- That, the Committee authorize payment to Canada News Wire Services of a $72.00 Annual Access Fee and $710.16 for transmitting the Committee's May 25 News Release (CEPA Enforcement) to every news room in the country.

On motion of David Pratt, it was agreed, -- That the Committee adopt a budget for the period from June 1, 1998 to March 31, 1999.

At 4:48 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
