MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No.49)

WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 1998

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:42 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Bernard Bigras, Charles Caccia, Aileen Carroll, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, Bill Gilmour, John Herron, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté.

Acting Members present: Clifford Lincoln for Gar Knutson.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert, Christine Labelle, Research Officers.

Appearing: The Honourable Christine Stewart, Minister of Environment.

Witnesses: From Environment Canada: François Guimont, Assistant Deputy Minister, Environment Protection Service; Ian Glen, Deputy Minister. From the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency: Sid Gershberg, President.

The Committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference from the House of Commons dated Thursday, February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for the Fiscal year ending March 31, 1999 (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 (Meeting No. 45)).

The Chair called Votes 1, 5 and 10.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with François Guimont, Ian Glen and Sid Gershberg, answered questions.

At 3:57 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:03 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 5:53 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
