MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 35)

 

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1998

 

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:13 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 371, West Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charles Caccia, Rick Casson, Yvon Charbonneau, Bill Gilmour, Joe Jordan, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberté, David Pratt.

 

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert, Research Officer.

 

Witnesses: From the Canadian Labour Congress: Dick Martin, Secretary Treasurer; Dave Bennett, National Director, Workplace Health, Safety and Environment.

 

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of the enforcement of the provisions of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and the enforcement of the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries Act including related regulations and administrative agreements (See Minutes of Proceedings, dated Thursday, February 5, 1998, Meeting no. 29).

 

Dick Martin made an opening statement and, with Dave Bennett, answered questions.

 

At 10:20 o'clock a.m., by unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

The Committee discussed its future business.

 

Ordered,--That as part of the Committee’s study of the enforcement of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and the enforcement of the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries Act, the Clerk call as witnesses to appear before the Committee on February 25, 1998, specific Environment Canada enforcement staff responsible for or working at enforcement in the field.

 

At 10:53 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
