MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No.38)

Tuesday, May 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met by Videoteleconference at 9:12 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, George Baker, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: George Baker, John Duncan, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gar Knutson, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer

Witnesses: From Coalition Comminity Group: Bruce Osmond and Ron Langdon. From Conservation Council of New Brunswick: Inka Milewski. From Northumberland County Woodlot: Jean-Guy Comeau, Owner. From the Legislative Assembly of New-Brunswick: Denis Landry, Members.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the Fisheries Issues.

In Miramichi, New Brunswick:

Inka Milewski, Jean-Guy Comeau and Denis Landry made opening statements and answered questions.

In Ottawa:

Ron Langdon and Bruce Osmond made opening statements and answered questions.

 

John Duncan moved, - That due to the fact the Committee did not receive the production of unexpurgated versions of the Observer Reports, although the Committee had requested these of the Ministry, this matter be reported to the House and that the House issue and order directing the Reports be produced in their entirety within 30 days.

On motion of Carmen Provenzano, it was agreed, -- That the said motion be dealt with at the next meeting.

On motion of John Duncan, it was agreed, - That this Committee write a letter in a response to the United States Senators who wrote a letter to Brian Tobin on March 31, 1998, regarding the seal hunt, and that the response letter should state that these United States Senators should leave the domestic affairs of Canada to Canadians.

Peter Stoffer moved, - That the Chair write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on behalf of the Committee urging the Minister to reconsider the allocation of the additional northern shrimp allocations.

And debate arising thereon.

 

 

 

At 11:11 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
