The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: John Cummins, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Gar Knutson, Gary Lunn, Yves Rocheleau, Lou Sekora and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Briefing from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Witness(es):From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Wayne Wouters, Deputy Minister; Larry Murray, Associate Deputy Minister; William J.S. Elliott, Deputy Commissioner; Carol Beal, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister; Jacque Robichaud, Director General; Liseanne Forand, Assistant Deputy Minister; Scott Parsons, Assistant Deputy Minsiter, Oceans; John Davis, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Science.

Wayne Wouters made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Pursuant to motion adopted on Tuesday, October 27, 1998, regarding 48 hours notice for substantive motions, Gary Lunn gave notice of the following motion:

- THAT the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans be requested to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity, but not later than November 26, 1998, to address Supplementary Estimates and the performance report of the respective department for the fiscal year 1998-1999.

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
