Meeting No. 69

Tuesday, April 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 9:10a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gar Knutson, Gary Lunn, Keith Martin, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Yves Rocheleau, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.

Other Member present: George Baker.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es):From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: David Bevan, Director General, Conservation and Protection; Ken Jones, Resource Management Officer, Seals, Anadromous and Catadromous; Gary Stenson, Section Head; Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister; From the International Marine Mammal Association: David M. Lavigne, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Sealing Issues.

On motion of Gar Knutson, it was agreed, - That the Operational Budget be approved.

Patrick Chamut made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:50 a.m., the sitting resumed.

By unanimous consent it was agreed, - That the Committee invite representatives from the Atlantic Veterinary College of the University of Prince Edward Island to appear on Tuesday, April 20, 1999.

David Lavigne made an opening statement and answered questions.

 At 12:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
