Wednesday, April 14, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 3:41 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gary Lunn, Lawrence O'Brien and Peter Stoffer.

Acting Member(s) present: Denis Coderre for Claude Drouin; George Baker for Carmen Provenzano.

Also present: From the Senate: The Honourable Willy Adams and the Honourable Charlie Watt, Senators.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es):From the Labrador Inuit Association: Mervin Andersen; From the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board: Jim Nobel; Ken Toner, Regional Superintendent; Larry Simpson, Sector Development Specialist; Ben Kovic, Chairman; From the International Fund for Animal Welfare: Rick Smith, National Director; Andrea Addario; Sandra Sorensen. From the Qikiqtaaluk corporation: Jerry Ell, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Sealing Issues.

On motion of Gary Lunn, it was unanimously agreed, - That the Committee invite Tina Feghan, Executive Director, Canadian Sealers Association, to appear on Thursday, April 15, 1999.

Mervin Andersen, Ben Kovic and Larry Simpson made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Rick Smith made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 6:21 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:29 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Jerry Ell made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
