The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:14 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es):From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Earl Wiseman, Director General; Edith Dussault, Director, Bilateral Relations Division, International Directorate; Chris J. Allen, Chief, Groundfish, Pelagic and Foreign Fisheries, Resource Management, Atlantic Fisheries Management.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Briefing on the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization.

Earl Wiseman made an opening statement and answered questions.

Wayne Easter moved, - That the travel budget be approved.

Wayne Easter moved, - That the Committee seek an Order of Reference to travel the week of March 22, 1999 to Nain, Cartwright and Labrador to hold meetings on fisheries issues and also to visit the whelping patch.

At 11:25 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
