MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 34)

THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 9:21 o’clock a.m., this day, in a televised session, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, George Baker, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: George Baker, Yvan Bernier, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Sophia Leung, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

Acting Members present: Eric Lowther for Howard Hilstrom, Roy Bailey for Gary Lunn and Guy St-Julien for Lawrence O'Brien.

Other Members present: Gordon Earle and Howard Hilstrom.


In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: As Individuals: Ms. Karen Olson, Commercial Fisherman (Lake Winnipeg); Kim Sigurdson, Marketers of Fish and Sea Food Products. From North West Co-operative Fisheries Ltd: Mr. Rick Hay, General Manager. From Fogo Island Co-Operative Society Ltd.: Cecil Godwin, President of the Board; Hugh St. Croix, General Manager.

1) Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider Central Canada Fisheries issues.

Karen Olson, Kim Sigurdson and Rick Hay made opening statements and answered questions.

2) Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider East Coast Fisheries issues.

Cecil Godwin and Hugh St. Croix from Fogo Island Co-Operative Society Ltd. made opening statements and answered questions.

On motion of Peter Stoffer, it was agreed, - That the Chair write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on behalf of the Committee requestiong the Minister to consider the request by the Fogo Island Co-Operative Society Ltd. for an offshore shrimp allocation of 3,000 tonnes if the Department of Fisheries and Oceans does increase the quotas.

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:16 p.m., the sitting resumed.

3) By unanimous consent, the Committee met in camera in order to resume consideration of the West Coast Report.

At 1:25 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
