Wednesday, May 13, 1998
The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met by Videoteleconference at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, George Baker, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: George Baker, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Howard Hilstrom, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Garry Lunn, Carmen Provenzano, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer

Witnesses: From British Columbia Shellfish Aquaculture: Ruth Salmon and Judith Reid. From Unique Seafood: Ken Mast. From Shellfish Depurator: Ed Helgeson, Processor. From the Deep Sea Trawlers Association of B.C.: Chris Day, Executive Director. From Pacific Packers Association: Bob Carpenter, Tendermen.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Fisheries Issues on the West Coast.
In Victoria:

Ruth Salmon made an opening statement and answered questions.
Ed Helgeson made an opening statement and answered questions.
On motion of Paul Steckle, it was agredd , -- That the Standing Committee on Fisheries an Oceans strongly urge the Government of Canada, through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, to fund the Canadian portion of the Sea Lamprey Control Program from the Department's "A" Base. The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans further recommends that the Government of Canada, through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, commits to provide a long term minimum funding guarantee of $8 million Canadian dollars per;year, to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission for the purpose of Sea Lamprey Control.
On motion of Howard Hilstrom, it was agreed, That the Fisheries and Oceans Committee request that the federal government put on hold any decision to downgrade the Manitoba Coast Guard base in Selkirk, and that this committee call witnesses to examine the base and to make recommendations.
On motion of John Duncan, it was agreed, That the Committee write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to urge him to issue an immediate moratorium on issuance of further "D" licenses.
At 5:30 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
