Meeting No. 59

Tuesday, December 1st, 1998

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Gary Lunn, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Yves Rocheleau, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es):From the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Industrial and Martime Coalition: Guy Dufresne, President; Michel Desbiens, President; Paul Gourdeau, Vice President; Gilles Champagnes, President; Wayne Smith, Vice President; Jack Ross, Manager of Traffic; Guy Genois, Director of Marine; Bryan Wilson, Vice President. From the Chamber of Maritime Commerce: J. Douglas Smith, President.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertook a study with respect to fees regarding Ice Breaking and other marine services.

Guy Dufresne made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

Gary Lunn gave notice to the following motion: - That the Chair be authorized to write to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans recommending that the Minister accept the proposal submitted to him by Guy Dufresne, Chairman of the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Maritime and Industrial Coalition.

Wayne Easter gave notice to the following motion : - That the Committee commence their study of the PEI report on Tuesday, December 8, 1998 and that it conclude and adopt the report the same day. That any member who has concerns regarding the said report consult with Wayne Easter and/or the researcher during the week of November 30, 1998, as to facilitate the work of the Committee on the above said report.

At 11:05 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
