MEETING No. 76

Tuesday, May 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Nick Discepola, Paul E. Forseth, Derek Lee, John Maloney et Jack Ramsay.

Acting Members present: Gary Pillitteri for John McKay, Chuck Cadman for Garry Breitkreuz.

In attendance : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst and Nancy Holmes, Research Officer. From the Committees and Legislative Services Branch: Monique Hamilton and Suzanne Verville, Legislative Clerks.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: George Thomson, Deputy Minister; Judith Bellis, Senior Counsel, Judicial Affairs Unit.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, April 21, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-37, An Act to amend the Judges Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings of Monday, May 11, 1998, Meeting No. 67).

The Committee commenced comprehensive consideration of the Bill.

On Clause 1

And debate arising thereon.

Clause 1 carried, on division.

Clauses 2 to 21 carried severally.

The Title carried.
