Tuesday, November 3, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Chuck Cadman, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, John McKay, John Reynolds, Jacques Saada.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: David Goetz, Researcher and Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Witness(es):From the Department of Justice: Don Piragoff, General Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Jacques Lemire, Counsel, International Assistance Group.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, October 20, 1998, being read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-40, an Act respecting extradition, to amend the Canada Evidence Act, the Criminal Code, the Immigration Act and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act and to amend and repeal other Acts in consequence be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

 

The Chair called Clause 1.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 9:11 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:14 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 10:55 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:00 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee travel to Iqaluit during the week of November 22 to hold hearings on Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence.

It was agreed, -- That pursuant to Standing Order 108(1), a Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be established to proceed with the statutory review of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act and to report thereon to the Committee; that it be chaired by John Maloney and that the Whips of all parties designate the other Members to sit on the Sub-Committee.

At 11:23 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
