MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

MEETING No. 81

Wednesday, June 10, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met in camera at 4:05 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Michel Bellehumeur, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney and Jack Ramsay.

Acting Members present: Chuck Cadman for Garry Breitkreuz, Ivan Grose for Eleni Bakopanos, Paddy Torsney for Nick Discepola, Judi Longfield for Andrew Telegdi.

In attendance : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Marilyn Pilon and Nancy Holmes, Research Officers.

The Committee proceeded to consider future business.

It was moved, -- That the Committee’s budget in the amount of $15,000 for the National Forum on the victims’ role in the Criminal Justice System be adopted.

After debate, the motion was agreed to.

It was moved, -- That members and staff of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be authorized to travel to Kingston (Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick between August 4 and September 18, 1998, to review the Corrections and Conditional Release Act.

After debate, the motion was agreed to.

It was moved, -- That the Committee approve a travel budget in the amount of $7,541.40 for the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights unofficial meetings and site visits in Kingston (Ontario) and a travel budget in the amount of $32,173.95 to hold public hearings and to visit sites in Halifax (Nova Scotia) and Moncton (New Brunswick) in relation to the Committee’s review of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act.

After debate, the motion was agreed to.

At 4:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
