Wednesday, November 25, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 4:16 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney and John Reynolds.

Acting Member present: Monique Guay for Michel Bellehumeur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Researcher and Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Appearing: From the Department of Justice: The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: Karen Markham, Counsel; Adair Crosby, Counsel; Howard H. Bebbington, Counsel; Yvan Roy, Senior General Counsel.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, October 29, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-57, An Act to amend the Nunavut Act with respect to the Nunavut Court of Justice and to amend other Acts in consequence. (See Minutes of Proceeding, Thursday, November 19, 1998, Meeting No. 100).

The Minister made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
