MEETING No. 50

Monday, APRIL 20, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Sheila Finestone, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, John McKay, Jack Ramsay et Andrew Telegdi.

Acting Members present: Joe Jordan for Derek Lee, Myron Thompson for Garry Breitkreuz, Chuck Cadman for Paul E. Forseth.

In attendance: : From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Nancy Holmes, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: George Thomson, Deputy Minister; Mario Dion, Associate Deputy Minister, Civil Law and Corporate Management; Thea Herman, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy Sector; Richard G. Mosley, Assistant Deputy Minister, Criminal Policy; John Sims, Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Citizenship and Immigration.

The Order of Reference dated Thursday, February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, being read as follows:

Ordered, -- That votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 under JUSTICE, be referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

The Chair called Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50.

The Minister made a statement and, with George Thomson, John Sims and Richard Mosley, answered questions.

At 5:42 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
