Meeting No. 139

Wednesday, May 5, 1999

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Maloney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Reg Alcock, Eleni Bakopanos, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, Derek Lee, Peter MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, Richard Marceau, John McKay, John Reynolds and Jacques Saada.

Acting Member present: Jack Ramsay for Chuck Cadman.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Marilyn Pilon, Research Officer; Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.

Appearing: From the Department of Justice: The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: Morris Rosenberg, Deputy Minister; Janice Charette, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy Section; Yvan Roy, Senior General Counsel, Criminal Law Policy Section; Robert Bourgeois, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(6) and the Order of Reference dated Monday, March 1st, 1999, relating to the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000, being read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 under JUSTICE, be referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

The Chair called Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50.

The Minister made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
