The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Jim Jones, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Daniel Brassard and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Robert Keyes, Senior Vice-President, International; Phil Saunders, Vice-President, Commercial Relations. From the Alliance of Manufacturers & Exporters Canada: Jayson Myers, Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist; Mathew Wilson, Policy Analyst. From the As Individual: Colin J. Bennett, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Victoria.
Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.
Robert Keyes, Jayson Myers and Colin Bennett each made an opening statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.
At 11:03 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
