The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 307, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Rahim Jaffer, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Janko Peric, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Information Technology Association of Canada: Wayne Scott, Government Programs, Executive; Carol M. Stephenson, Chair (Designate), ITAC Board of Governors and, President & CEO. From the Canadian Association of Internet Providers: Margo L. Langford, Chair; Julie Garcia, Chair, Privacy Committee, CAIP, Director, Public Policy, America Online CAOL Canada. As Individual: Prof. Michael Geist, Professor of Internet Law, Ottawa University.
Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 3, 1998, consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to support and promote electronic commerce by protecting personal information that is collected, used or disclosed in certain circumstances, by providing for the use of electronic means to communicate or record information or transactions and by amending the Canada Evidence Act, the Statutory Instruments Act and the Statute Revision Act.
Carol Stephenson, Margo Langford, Julie Garcia and Michael Geist each made an opening statement and with the witnesses, answered questions.
At 10:49 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
