MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 33)

Wednesday, 22 April 1998

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 4:00 o’clock p.m. , this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Jim Jones, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : Daniel Brassard, Antony Jackson and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Appearing: The Hon. John Manley, Minister of Industry Canada; The Hon. Ronald Duhamel, Secretary of State, Western Economic Diversification.

Witnesses: From the Department of Industry: Kevin G. Lynch, Deputy Minister; Konrad G.F. Finckenstein, Q.C., Director of Investigation and Research, Competition Act, Competition Bureau. From the Western Economic Diversification: Oryssia Lennie, Deputy Minister. Judy Ferguson, Assistant Deputy Minister/Ottawa..

In accordance with its mandate under Order of Reference of the House dated February 26, 1998, the Committee commenced a study on the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, INDUSTRY, Votes 1, 5, L10, L15, 20, 25, 30., 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 and 120.

The Hon. John Manley made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:04 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:08 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Hon. Ron Duhamel made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 6:01 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
