MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 32)

Tuesday, 21 April 1998.

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:32 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 362-E, East Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Antoine Dubé, Tony Ianno, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: : Daniel Brassard and Antony Jackson, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Information Technology Association of Canada: Carol Stephenson, Chair (Designate), ITAC Board of Governors and, President & CEO, Stentor Resource Centre Inc.; Gaylen Duncan, President & CEO, ITAC. From the Department of National Defence: Howard Dickson, Chief, Information Officer; Colonel G.G. Hug, Special Advisor, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff; Colonel A.B. Conrad, Program Manager Year 2000; Eric L. Shipley, Executive Director, Emergency Preparedness Canada (EDEPC). From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: David Morreau, Director, Year 2000 Project.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed a study on Information Technology: Preparedness for Year 2000.

Gaylen Duncan from the Information Technology Association of Canada made a statement and, with Carol Stephenson, answered questions.

Howard Dickson from the Department of National Defence, Eric L. Shipley from Emergency Preparedness Canada and David Morreau from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police each made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:33 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
