(Meeting No. 13)

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1997

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 3:31 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 362 of the East Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Tony Ianno, Marlene Jennings, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Eric Lowther, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

Other Member present: Roy Cullen.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament

Witnesses: From Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA): Roger Poirier, President and CEO; David Farnes, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs; Christopher Taylor, Legal Counsel. From Stentor: Nick Mulder, President and Director; Greg van Koughnett, Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs; Robert Tritt, National Director, International Affairs. From TELUS Corporation: George Addy, Executive Vice-President and Chief General Counsel; Philip G. Rogers, Legal Counsel. From Bell Canada: Bernard A. Courtois, Group Vice President, Regulatory; Linda C. Gervais, Vice President, Federal Government Relations. From ACC TelEnterprises: Maggs Barrett, Executive Vice-President, Local Market; George Horhota, Vice-President, Corporate Development, ACC North America.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, November 25, 1997, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-17, An Act to amend the Telecommunications Act and the Teleglobe Canada Reorganization and Divestiture Act.

Roger Poirier made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, answered questions.

Nick Mulder from Stentor, made a statement.

At 4:00 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:40 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

Nick Mulder resumed making a statement and, with the other witnesses from Stentor, answered questions.

George Addy made a statement and, with the other witness from Telus Corporation, answered questions.

Bernard A. Courtois from Bell Canada, made a statement and answered questions.

George Horhota and Maggs Barrett from ACC TelEnterprises, each made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:14 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
