MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 65

Thursday, April 11, 2002

The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Stan Dromisky, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Bob Speller, Yolande Thibeault, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Carol Skelton for Diane Ablonczy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors: Jeanne Cruikshank, Vice-President, Atlantic Office; Eric Claus, Vice-Chair of the CCGD Board of Directors and CEO of Co-op Atlantic. From the Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada: Laurie Curry, Vice-President, Public Policy and Scientific Affairs; James Krushelniski, President and CEO, H.J. Heinz Company of Canada Ltd.; Thomas Singer, President, Reinhart Foods Limited.

The Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

It was agreed – That the Committee invite the Minister to appear before it from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, 2002, if Bill C-53 has been referred to the Committee.

It was agreed – That the Committee meet to discuss its future business in camera from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Tuesday, April 16, 2002.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the Labelling of Genetically Modified Foods.

Eric Claud, Jeanne Cruikshank and Laurie Curry each made a statement, and, with James Krushelniski and Thomas Singer, answered questions.

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
