Meeting No. 13

Thursday, May 3, 2001

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Ray Bonin, Diane Bourgeois, Bonnie Brown, Yvon Charbonneau, Stan Dromisky, James Lunney, Rob Merrifield, Stephen Owen, Carolyn Parrish, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro.

Acting Members present: Preston Manning for Diane Ablonczy, Wendy Lill for Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, research officers.

Appearing: From Health Canada: The Honourable Allan Rock, Minister of Health.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee met to consider the request of the Minister that it undertake to study and report on the draft legislation on Assisted Human Reproduction tabled this day in the House of Commons.

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

Stan Dromisky moved, -- That the Committee thank the Minister for allowing it to participate in the formative, creative stages of this bill; That the Committee assure the Minister that it wholeheartedly accepts this challenge; and, That the Committee's research staff be instructed to prepare a tentative workplan as soon as possible.

Debate arose thereon.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

At 12:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
