Meeting No. 58

Thursday, February 21, 2002

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Stan Dromisky, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Yolande Thibeault and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Michel Guimond for Réal Ménard.

Other Member present: Bob Speller.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Sonya Norris, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Health: The Honourable Anne McLellan, Minister of Health.

Witness(es): From the Department of Health: Ian Shugart, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Policy and Communications Branch; Munir Sheikh, Associate Deputy Minister. From the Canadian General Standards Board: Doryne Peace, Chair of the Committee on Voluntary Labelling of Foods Obtained or Not Obtained through Genetic Modification; Marian Gaucher, Secretary to the Committee.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee proceeded to an information session on Departmental matters.

The Minister made a statement and, with Ian Shugart and Munir Sheikh, answered questions.

At 12:08 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:12 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its Study on the Labelling of Genetically Modified Foods.

Doryne Peace made a statement and, with Marian Gaucher, answered questions.

At 1:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
