Meeting No. 28

Thursday, October 4, 2001

The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Colleen Beaumier, Jeannot Castonguay, Brenda Chamberlain, Stan Dromisky, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Yolande Thibeault

Acting Member(s) present: Pauline Picard for Diane Bourgeois

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witness(es): From Health Canada: Rhonda Ferderber, Director, Special Projects Division, Policy, Planning and Priorities Directorate, Health Policy and Communications Branch; Francine Manseau, Senior Policy Analyst, Health Policy and Communications Branch, Special Projects Division. From Justice Canada: Judy Hunter, Counsel, Legal Services.

The Committee resumed consideration of the draft legislation on Assisted Human Reproduction. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, May 3, 2001, Meeting No. 13).

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(1), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters relating to the future business of the Committee.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee adopt the proposed work plan prepared by its research staff, and that the said work plan be subject to further modification by the Committee.

It was agreed, -- That the proposed work plan be modified by the scheduling of a meeting to take place throughout the day on Monday, December 3, 2001, at which lunch will be served.

Judy Sgro moved, -- That the Committee form two subgroups, one of which will travel to eastern Canadian cities and the other to western Canadian cities during the week of October 28, 2001.

Debate arose thereupon.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

Hélène Scherrer moved, -- That the Chair be authorized to approve and finalize the travel budgets and itinerary for the Committee’s cross-Canada trips, and to submit the said budgets to the Budget Sub-Committee of the Liaison Committee.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
