The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:47 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Yolande Thibeault and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; Maria Barrados, Assistant Auditor General; Patricia MacDonald, Principal; Peter Simeoni, Principal.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee commenced its consideration of Chapter 5 (Voted Grants and Contributions: Program Management), Chapter 9 (Health Canada – A Proactive Approach to Good Health) and Chapter 11 (Illicit Drugs: The Federal Government’s Role) of the December 2001 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Sheila Fraser made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 1:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
