Meeting No. 10

Thursday, April 5, 2001

The Standing Committee on Health met at 12:07 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Yvon Charbonneau, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Carolyn Parrish, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Members present: John O'Reilly for Stan Dromisky, David Price for Stephen Owen.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, research officers.

Witnesses: From Health Canada: Robert Lafleur, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services Branch; Ian Shugart, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Policy and Communications Branch; Dann Michols, Assistant Deputy Minister, Healthy Environment & Consumer Safety Branch; Ian Potter, Assistant Deputy Minister, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch; Orvel Marquardt, Director General, Departmental Financial Planning and Administration Directorate, Corporate Services Branch.

In accordance with the Committee's mandate under the Standing Order 108(2), information session on the "Plans and Priorities" section of the 2001 - 2002 Estimates.

Ian Shugart and Robert Lafleur made opening statements, and, along with the other witnesses, answered questions.

John O'Reilly moved, - That the Standing Committee on Health be granted an operational budget in the amount of $37,900.00 for the budget period of April 1 to June 30, 2001 (fiscal year 2001 - 2002).

The question was put on the motion and it was, by show of hands, agreed to: YEAS: 9; NAYS: 0

It was agreed, - That the witnesses presently before the Committee be invited to return at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2001, to continue to respond to questions on the "Plans & Priorities", that the Committee commence consideration of the Main Estimates 2001 - 2002 on Thursday, April 26, 2001, and that the Minister of Health be invited to appear before the Committee in that regard at 11:00 a.m. on that date.

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
