Meeting No. 53

Wednesday, March 10, 1999

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 3:45 p.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Guy St-Julien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Bryden, John Finlay, Louise Hardy, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Derrek Konrad, Robert D. Nault, Mike Scott, Guy St-Julien and Bryon Wilfert.

Acting Members present: Paul Steckle for David Iftody, Ted White for Myron Thompson, Gilles Perron for Claude Bachand.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Jill Wherrett, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(3), the Committee commenced consideration of a letter received on Tuesday, March 2, 1999 which read as follows:

Dear Ms. Fisher

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(3), a meeting of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs shall be convened within ten sitting days for the purpose of examining the concerns raised by the Musqueam controversy at Musqueam Park in Vancouver, British Columbia.

And debate arising thereon:

Bob Nault moved, -That the Committee undertake to review the administration of leases under the Indian Act and examine best practice approaches.

After debate, Mike Scott moved, -That the motion be amended by inserting the word "urgently" after the word "committee".

After debate, by unanimous consent, Mike Scott withdrew his amendment.

Bryon Wilfert moved, -That the motion be amended by inserting the words ", within a reasonable time frame," after the word "undertake".

The question being put on the amendment, it was agreed to.

The question being put on the motion, as amended, it was agreed to unanimously.

At 4:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
