Wednesday, April 21, 1999
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Raymonde Folco, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Norman Doyle, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Pat Martin, John McKay, Grant McNally, Réal Ménard and Andrew Telegdi.
Acting Member present: John Bryden for Steve Mahoney.
Other Member present: Joseph Volpe.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Council for Refugees: Francisco Rico-Martinez, President; Sharryn Aiken, Past President. From the National Council of Canadian Filipino Associations: Salvador Cabugao, President; Emilio Benavince, Legal Counsel for Canadian Ethnocultural Council and the National Council of Canadian Filipino Associations. From the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations: Fo Niemi, Executive Director; Walter Chiyantom, Chair of the Board.
Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated March 1, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-63, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, March 3, 1999, Meeting No. 50)
The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.
Sharryn Aiken from the Canadian Council for Refugees made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.
Emilio Benavince from the National Council of Canadian Filipino Associations made a statement and answered questions. Salvador Cabugao made a statement.
Walter Chiyantom and Fo Niemi from the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations made statements and answered questions.
At 6:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned until 9:00 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 1999.
