Wednesday, April 14, 1999

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Rey Pagtakhan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Leon Benoit, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, Pat Martin, John McKay, Grant McNally, Réal Ménard, Rey Pagtakhan and Andrew Telegdi.

Acting Member present: John Bryden for Steve Mahoney.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: (IN VANCOUVER) From the Independent Immigration Aid Association: Alan Hackett, Director; Robert Davis, Director; Jack Volrich, Director; Quentin Walker, Director. Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated March 1, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-63, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, March 3, 1999, Meeting No. 50)

The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.

Alan Hackett and Jack Volrich from the Independent Immigration Aid Association made statements and answered questions.

Wilfred Wan from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

Gordon H. Maynard from the Canadian Bar Association made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

James Chou from the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society made a statement, and with the other witness, answered questions.

Mason Loh, on behalf ot the Royal Pacific Real Estate Group Ltd., made a statement and answered questions.

Katherine Manvell from the Organization of Professional Immigration Consultants Inc. (OPIC) made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned until 9:00 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 1999.
