MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS Thursday, November 27, 1997 The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met this day at 3:39 p.m., in Room 308, West Block, Stan Dromisky, presiding. Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Stan Dromisky, Gordon Earle, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, Réal Ménard, Maria Minna, John Reynolds, Jacques Saada and Diane St-Jacques. Acting Member present: Paddy Torsney for Sarmite Bulte. In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer. Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Georges Tsaï, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Bill Sheppit, Acting Deputy Minister; Greg Fyffe, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Craig Goodes, Director, Asylum, Refugee Branch; Brian Grant, Director, Program Development, Enforcement Branch; Jeff LeBane, Director General, International Region; Gerry Robins, Director General, Finance Administration. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Study of the operation of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration and of a document intitled: "Performance Report". By unanimous consent, on motion of Réal Ménard, -- It was agreed, -- That during this session, the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration invites the departmental officials in charge of the modern war crimes section. On motion of Steve Mahoney, it was agreed, -- That, it be possible for each member of the Committee to pass on his/her 5 minutes of questions and comments to an another member of his/her party, if the member whose turn has come to speak, so wishes. Georges Tsaï made an opening statement and, with Bill Shepitt, Brian Grant, Greg Fyffe and Gerry Robins, answered questions. By unanimous consent, Réal Ménard tabled a copy of a letter dated June 14, 1996, by Janice Cochrane, Deputy Minister. It was agreed, -- That, the days and time of the Committee’s meetings be changed to be the following ones: Wednesdays: From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Thursdays: From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; That lunch be provided whenever the Committee meets on Thursdays from 12:00 noon; and -- That, the respective whip and House Leader of each party be informed, in order, to take the necessary measures for the changes to be implimented. At 5:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair. |
