MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

(Meeting No. 36)

Thursday, June 11, 1998

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 11:08 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Stan Dromisky, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Sarmite Bulte, Stan Dromisky, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, John N. McKay, Réal Ménard, Maria Minna, Deepak Obhrai, John Reynolds and Jacques Saada.

Acting Member present: Dick Harris for John Reynolds.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider a motion of Mr. Deepak Obhrai.

Deepak Obhrai moved, -That Pursuant to section 18 of the Constitution Act, section 4 of the Parliament of Canada Act and section 108(1)(a) of the Standing Orders, this committee send for the names and crimes committed of all 1497 criminally inadmissible people who received Minister of Citizenship and Immigration entry permits in the year 1997.

And debate arising thereon;

It was agreed, - That the motion be amended by deleting the word "names" and substituting the following therefor: "country of origin"

At 12:04 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:18 o’clock p.m., the sitting was resumed.

The Committee resumed consideration of the main motion as amended.

Dick Harris moved, - That the words "country of origin" in the amendment, on the main motion, be deleted.

And further debate arising thereon;

Dick Harris moved, - That the Committee do now adjourn until 3:30 p.m.

After debate, the question being put on the amendment, it was, by a show of hands, negatived: YEAS: 3; NAYS 9.

Dick Harris moved, - That the question be now put on the amendment.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was, by a show of hands, negatived: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 8.

Jacques Saada moved, - That the meeting be adjourned.

And the question being put on the motion, it was, by a show of hands, agreed to: YEAS: 8: NAYS: 4.

At 1:03 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
