Meeting No. 52

Thursday, March 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Rey Pagtakhan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, Pat Martin, Grant McNally, Réal Ménard and Rey Pagtakhan.

Acting Members present: John Bryden for Paul DeVillers and Benoît Serré for Andrew Telegdi.

Other Member present: Gurmant Grewal.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses :From the Mennonite Central Committee Canada: William Janzen, Director of the Ottawa Office; Henry Bergen, Documentation Worker; From the Canadian Ethnocultural Council: Jonas Ma, Member of Equality and Justice Committee; Salvador Cabugao, Member of the Executive.

Pursuant to an Order or Reference of the House dated March 1, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-63, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, March 3, 1999, Meeting No. 50)

The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.

William Janzen from the Mennonite Central Committee Canada made a statement, with additional remarks by Henry Bergen, and answered questions.

Jonas Ma and Salvador Cabugao from the Canadian Ethnocultural Council made statements and answered questions.

Leon Benoit gave notice of a motion as follows:

- That the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration be requested to re-appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity but no later than March 25th, 1999, to address the Performance Review of the Department for the fiscal year of 1998-1999.

At 11:35 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
