Wednesday, October 17, 2001

The Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Mac Harb, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Mark Eyking, Mac Harb, Pat O’Brien, Pierre Paquette, Svend Robinson, Bob Speller, and Tony Valeri.

Acting Members present: John Duncan for Rick Casson, Pat Martin for Svend Robinson.

Other Member present: Monte Solberg.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, October 2, 2001, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That the Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment invite Mr. Juan Somavia, Director General of the International Labour Organization, to appear before it on Wednesday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Juan Somavia made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, October 2, 2001, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-32, An Act to implement the Free Trade Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica, be referred to the Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment.

The Chair called Clause 1.

Mac Harb tabled a letter from the Confectionery Manufacturers Association of Canada.

 

Pat O’Brien, Claude Carrière and Susan Vinet made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Bruce Webster, Sandra Marsden, Dan Lafrance, and Vincent Dagenais made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:10 p.m. the Sub-Committee proceeded to clause-by-clause consideration of the bill.

ORDERED, -- That the Chair report Bill C-32, An Act to implement the Free Trade Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica, without amendments to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade as the Third Report of the Sub-Committee.
