Meeting No. 14

Wednesday, October 31, 2001

The Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Mac Harb, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Rick Casson, Mark Eyking, Mac Harb and Gary Lunn.

Acting Member present:  Francine Lalonde for Pierre Paquette.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg and Michael Holden, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Air Transport Association of Canada: Warren Everson, Vice-President, Policy and Strategic Planning. From the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association: George Khun, Executive Director. From the Public Policy Forum: Yves Poisson, Consultant. From the The Canadian/American Border Trade Alliance: James Phillips, President. From the Railway Association of Canada: Bruce Burrows, Vice-President, Public Affairs, Government Relations; Chris Jones, Director, Federal/Provincial Government Liaison. From the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police: Vincent Westwik, General Counsel, Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police Service; Vince Bevan, Vice-President. From the Canadian Police Association: David Griffin, Executive Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) - Study on U.S. - Canada Border delays and the commercial implications for trade.

David Griffin, Chief Vince Bevan, Bruce Burrows, James Phillips, Yves Poisson, George Khun and Warren Everson made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:12 p.m., the sitting resumed, in camera.

It was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee commence a study on the recent developments in the softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the United States.

It was agreed, – That the Sub-Committee commence a study on matters concerning the Canadian Steel industry.

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
