The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 4:05 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Gordon Earle, Art Hanger, Jim Hart, René Laurin, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, David Pratt, Elsie Wayne, Bob Wood.
Acting Member present: Gurbax Malhi for Janko Peric.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.
Appearing: From the Department of National Defence: The Hon. Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence.
Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Jim Judd, Deputy Minister; Gen Maurice Baril, Chief of the Defence Staff; Lt-Gen Bill Leach, Chief of Land Staff.
The Committee proceeded to its Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, February 29, 2000 relating to the Main Estimates for the year ending March 31, 2001 - Votes 1, 5 and 10 under National Defence.
The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.
At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
