The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Art Hanger, René Laurin, Judi Longfield, Pat O'Brien, Janko Peric, David Pratt, Elsie Wayne and Bob Wood.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.
Appearing: From the Department of National Defence: The Hon. Arthur C. Eggleton, Minister.
Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Gen Maurice Baril, Chief of the Defence Staff; Lt-Gen V.M. Caines, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources - Military; Richard Burton, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Material.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the mandate of the Department of National Defence.
The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.
At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
