MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 33

Monday, May 8, 2000

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:25 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Art Hanger, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, Janko Peric and Elsie Wayne.

Acting Member present: Maud Debien for René Laurin.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.

Witness: From Bosnia-Hercegovina: Wolfgang Petrisch, High Representative of the International Community.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a discussion on the situation in Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Wolfgang Petritsch made an opening statement and answered questions.

John O'Reilly gave notice of the following motion:

- That SCONDVA affirms its unqualified support for the continued evolution of an effective office of the Ombudsman DND/CF, that is secured by regulations to the National Defence Act which remove impediments to the proper functioning of the office and ensure the co-operation of all sectors of DND/CF so that the Office of the Ombudsman DND/CF can enhance the welfare and quality of life of all members of DND/CF within an open, transparent and accountable institution that respects individual rights and fundamental fairness. The Ombudsman should report regularly to SCONDVA on the experience and continued evolution of the Office.

At 4:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
