MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 23

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5th, 1998

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:10 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 237-C of the Centre Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, André Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Gurmant Grewal, Raymonde Folco, Ted McWhinney, Denis Paradis, Julian Reed, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller, Daniel Turp.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From Canadian Pugwash and Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons: Douglas Roche, Chair. From Project Ploughshares: Bill Robinson, National Staff. From Veterans Against Nuclear Arms: David R. Morgan, President. From Physicians for Global Survival: Konia Trouton, M.D., President; Alex Bryans, Member of the Board. From the Canadian Peace Alliance: Paul Klopstock, Vice-President, "Les artistes pour la paix"; Judith Berlyn, Westmount Initiative for Peace.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its study of Canada’s policy on nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament.

It was agreed, --That the Committee convene a briefing session on the situation in Iraq at the earliest opportunity.

The witnesses each made an opening statement and answered questions.

It was agreed, --That the Committee meet with a parliamentary delegation from Lithuania on Tuesday February 17th, 1998.

At 11:45 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
