Monday, March 22, 1999
The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:31 a.m. this day, in the Salon A of Hotel Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland, the Acting Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Bob Speller, Darrel Stinson, Daniel Turp.
Associate Member present: Sarmite Bulte.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Alliance of Manufacturers & Exporters Canada: Lorne Janes, National Chairman & Past Chairman; Burf Ploughman, Vice-President. From the Newfoundland Chicken Producers Supply-Management Group: Eugene Legge, Vice-Chair. From the National Anti-Poverty Organization: Bev Brown, International Secretary. From the Fisheries Association of Newfoundland and Labrador: Alastair O'Rielly, President; Kevin Coombs, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's trade objectives and the forthcoming agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO). (See the Minutes of Proceedings of October 22, 1998, Meeting no. 73.)
At 9:35 a.m., Lorne Janes made an opening statement and, with Burf Ploughman, answered questions.
At 10:08 a.m., Eugene Legge made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 10:55 a.m., Bev Brown made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 11:34 a.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 1:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.
At 1:36 p.m., Alastair O'Rielly made an opening statement and, with Kevin Coombs, answered questions.
At 2:44 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
