The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:19 a.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Eugène Bellemare, Yvon Godin, John Herron, Benoît Sauvageau, Raymond Simard and Yolande Thibeault.

 

Acting Members present: Roy Cullen for Dan McTeague and Derek Lee for Jeannot Castonguay.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Mark Bisby, Vice President , Research; Michèle O' Rourke, Strategic Initiatives Associate, Institute of Health Services and Public Research. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada: Anne Gilbert, Geography Professor; Christian Sylvain, Director.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Raymond Simard, it was agreed, — That Mauril Bélanger be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Eugène Bellemare, it was agreed, — That Yvon Godin be elected as Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Raymond Simard, it was agreed, — That Yolande Thibault be elected as Goverment Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of the support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada in regards to bilinguism and official languages.
 

Christian Sylvain and Anne Gilbert each made a statement and answered questions.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of March 20, 2003, the Committy resumed its study on the subject-matter of Bill C-202 and on health care in both official languages.
 

Mark Bisby made a statement and, with Michèle O'Rourke, answered questions.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
