Meeting No. 28

Tuesday, November 6, 2001

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, Northern Development and Natural Resources met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Raymond Bonin, presiding.

 

At 11:06 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 11:07 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Gérard Binet, Raymond Bonin, Serge Cardin, Reed Elley, John Finlay, John Godfrey, Nancy Karetak-Lindell,

Acting Member(s) present: Deborah Grey for Gerald Keddy;  John Richardson for Jean-Guy Carignan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages and Mary Hurley, researchers.

Witnesses :  From the Assembly of First Nations: Matthew Coon Come, National Chief.; Peigi Wilson, Senior Policy Analyst;  Richard Prowless, Special Advisor to the National Chief.  As Individual: Senator The Hon. Lois Wilson.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, October 2, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-27, An Act respecting the long-term management of nuclear fuel waste (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, November 1st, 2001, Meeting No. 27).

Matthew Coon Come made a statement.

Matthew Coon Come and Peigi Wilson answered questions.

At 11:53 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Senator The Honourable Lois Wilson made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:26 p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 12:35 p.m. the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed, - That if the Committee does not complete Clause-by-Clause consideration of Bill C-27 on Thursday, November 8, 2001, that any subsequent Clause-by-Clause meetings on Bill C-27 be scheduled outside of the Committee’s allocated meeting times.

It was agreed, - That Senior Departmental Officials appear from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. regarding Bill C-37 on Tuesday, November 20, 2001.

It was agreed, - That one hour be allocated for the appearance of witnesses for Bill C-37 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 and, that if there are no witnesses, that the Committee proceed to Clause-by-Clause consideration of Bill C-37.

It was agreed, - That, if necessary, the Committee meet from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 for Clause-by-Clause consideration of Bill C-37.

It was agreed, - That the committee invite Senior Departmental Officials to appear from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 22, 2001 regarding Bill C-39.

It was agreed, - That the Committee invite the Premier of the Yukon Government to appear from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 22, 2001 regarding Bill C-39.

At 12:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
