Meeting No. 9

Tuesday, April 3, 2001

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, Northern Development and Natural Resources met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Gérard Binet, Jean-Guy Carignan, David Chatters, Rodger Cuzner, John Finlay, John Godfrey, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Richard Marceau, Benoît Serré, Guy St-Julien, Maurice Vellacott.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages and Mary Hurley, researchers.

Witness(es): From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Chantal Bernier, Assistant Deputy Minister, Socio-Economic Policy and Programs Sector; Bill Montour, Advisor, Community Development; Fred Smith, Policy Advisor, Infrastructure and Housing, Community Development. From the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Deborah Taylor, Director, Assisted Housing Division. From the Health Canada: Keith Conn, Director General, Community Health Programs; Loc Nguyen, Director, Research and Development, Environmental Contaminants.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), An inquiry into the Crisis in Aboriginal Housing.

Chantal Bernier, Deborah Taylor and Keith Conn made statements.

Deborah Taylor, Chantal Bernier, Bill Montour, Fred Smith and James Robar answered questions.

Maurice Vellacott moved, - That in response to their written request of February 23, 2001, AFN Veterans Coordinator Larry Whiteduck, Vice Chief Perry Bellegarde and Grand Chief Howard Anderson be invited to address the committee to present the findings and recommendations of the National Roundtable on First Nations Veterans on April 19, 2001.

After debate, it was agreed, - That the Committee forward the letter to the Standing Committee on National Defense and Veterans Affairs with a letter requesting they address this request to appear.

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
