MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 7

Tuesday, March 27, 2001

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, Northern Development and Natural Resources met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Gérard Binet, Jean-Guy Carignan, David Chatters, Rodger Cuzner, John Finlay, John Godfrey, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Richard Marceau, Pat Martin, Benoît Serré, Guy St-Julien, Maurice Vellacott.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages; Mary Hurley, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Grand Council of the Crees: Dr. Ted Moses, Grand Chief. From the Chisasibi Indian Band: Chief Violet Pachanos; Marion Sam-Cox, Elder; Janie Pachanos, Interpreter. From the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay: Dr. Robert Harris, Director of Public Health. From the Technical Group (construction): Normand Hawkins; Vir Handa.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), An inquiry into the Crisis in Aboriginal Housing.

It was agreed, - That the documents be distributed in the language in which they were received on the understanding that they would be translated as soon as possible.

Ted Moses, Violet Pachanos, Robert Harris made statements, and with Normand Hawkins and Vir Handa, answered questions.

Marion Sam-Cox made a presentation, interpreted by Janie Pachanos.

At 1:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
