The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 11:19 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Yvon Godin, Ghislain Lebel, Julian Reed, Werner Schmidt, Guy St-Julien, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.
Acting Members present: Dale Johnston for David Chatters; Monique Guay for Serge Cardin.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Canadian Labour Congress: David Bennett, Director, Health & Safety Department; Hassan Yussuff, Executive Vice-President; Jeff Bennie, National Representative. From the "Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ)": Émile Vallée, Political Advisor. From the CSN: Claudette Carbonneau, Vice-President; Yvan Malo, Servicing Representative, Health and Security; Chantal Piau, Vice-President, "Fédération nationale des communications".
The Order of Reference dated Friday, March 24, 2000, being now read as follows:
ORDERED, -- That Bill C-12, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part II) in respect of occupational health and safety, to make technical amendments to the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and to make consequential amendments to other Acts be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations.
The Chair called Clause 1.
Hassan Yussuff from the Canadian Labour Congress, Émile Vallée from the "Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses au Québec" and Claudette Carbonneau from the "Confédération des syndicats nationaux" each made an opening statement and with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 12:51 p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 12:53 p.m., the sitting resumed.
By unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of its future business.
At 12:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
