Meeting No. 26

Wednesday, May 3, 2000

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Serge Cardin, David Chatters, Yvon Godin, Tony Ianno, Carmen Provenzano, Julian Reed, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Natural Resources: The Hon. Ralph Goodale, Minister of Natural Resources.

Witnesses: From the Department of Natural Resources: Dr. Peter Harrison, Deputy Minister, Canadian Forest Service; Dr. Marc Denis Everell, Assistant Deputy Minister, Earth Sciences Sector; Bruce Holden, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services Sector; Senior Officials.

In accordance with its Order of Reference from the House of Commons of Tuesday, February 29, 2000, consideration of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001 and report on Plans and Priorities (Part III).

By unanimous consent, the Chair called Votes 1, 5, 15, 20, 25 and 30 under NATURAL RESOURCES.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with Dr. Harrison, answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
