MINUTES OF PROCEEDING

Tuesday, November 4, 1997

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:32 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 705, La Promenade, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roger Gallaway, Dick Harris, Jim Jones, Yvan Loubier, Gary Pillitteri, Karen Redman, Gerry Ritz, Paul Szabo and Tony Valeri.

Acting Member present: Diane Ablonczy for Monte Solberg.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Richard Domingue and Marion Wrobel, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Geomatics Industry Association of Canada: Hugh O’Donnell, Vice-Chairman. From the Alliance of Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association: Stephen Van Houten, President; David Burn, Vice-President-Taxation, Nortel; Jayson Myers, Vice-President and Chief Economist. From the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association: Ian Young, Chairman, Finance Section and Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, Noranda Forest Inc.; Steve Stinson, Director, Finance and Business Issues. In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83.1, The Committee resumed its Pre-Budget Consultation Study. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, October 15, 1997, Meeting No. 3).

The witnesses participating in the Round Table, made statements and answered questions.

At 5:09 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:18 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed in camera to discuss future business of the Committee.

The Committee proceeded to debate the motion of Mrs. Ablonczy, --That the Standing Committee on Finance invite and bring Mr. José Pinera to appear as a witness on the issue of Bill C-2, now being studied by the Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was negatived on division.

On motion of Roger Gallaway, it was agreed --That the Clerk be instructed to provide a list of witnesses deemed to be knowledgeable on the Chilean Pension system.

At 5:41 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
