MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Wednesday, April 22, 1998

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:40 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Vice-Chair, Paddy Torney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Scott Brison, David Iftody, Gary Pillitteri, Karen Redman, Nelson Riis, Monte Solberg, Paul Szabo, Paddy Torsney and Tony Valeri.

Acting Members present: Réginald Bélair for Tony Valeri to 7:00 p.m., Pauline Picard for Gilles Perron; Paul Crête for Yvan Loubier at 7:00 p.m. Yvon Godin for Nelson Riis at 7:00 p.m. Christiane Gagnon for Gilles Perron.

In attendance: From the Committees and Legislative Services Directorate: Richard Dupuis, Legislative Clerk. From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marion G. Wrobel, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Cancer Society: Rob Cunningham, Senior Policy Analyst; Ken Kyle, Director of Public Issues. From Kamloops Indian Band: Manny Jules, Chief. From The Canadian Labour Congress: Kevin Hayes; Dick Martin, Secretary Treasurer. From the Canadian Federation of Independent Business: Garth Whyte, Vice-President, National Affairs.

In accordance with the Order of Reference of the House of Commons of Tuesday, March 31, 1998, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-36, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 24, 1998. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, April 2, 1998, Meeting No. 67).

Chief Manny made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:05 o'clock, p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 4:11 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

On Part 7.

Ken Kyle and Rob Cunningham made statements and answered questions.

On motion of Nelson Riis, it was agreed, - That the cigarette package sample tabled by the Canadian Cancer Society be filed as an Exhibit with the Committee, Exhibit A/98.

At 4:52 o'clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:04 o'clock p.m., the sitting resumed, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Dick Martin and Garth Whyte made statements and, with Kevin Hayes, answered questions.

At 8:47 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
